Today I started my observations for my CRJ and I choose to observe the Paradox cafe /commons in the Halle Library. When i went in I just sat down at a table, pulled out my journal and just observed my surroundings. I got there at 6:15pm and I stayed until 7:30pm. There were 6 booths being used and each one had about 1 to 2 people sitting there either doing homework, talking, eating or on their laptops. There were people walking in and out, ad there was only one cashier behind the counter. She was brewing coffee I guess they ran out. It was very quiet and people who were talkig kept their voices to a minimun. There was a older crowd there tonight, assuming they take night classes or they were just studying. "SEEUS" came in escoring 2 people, I think they were scared to walk across campus alone since it was dark. A group of three people walked in very loud, but nobody paid them any attention.. I think they are use to distractions so they just tuned them out. The older adults were ordering Coffees and Latte's and the younger adults were buying Pop chips. They probably was getting ready to go do some homework and just need a boost.

Good observations, Taylor! I like how you surveyed the room as a whole and took notice of what everyone there was doing. I'm interested in your comment that the loud people were ignored. Were they simply ignored or did anyone look annoyed, but not say anything, or something like that? This seems like a place where non-verbal communication would be a big deal. Also, I'm surprised that SEEUS took folks all the way to the cafe instead of dropping them off at the library entrance. What does that suggest to you? I mean, they're scared, but why? As you continue observing here, can you say more about the layout of the room and the kinds of people that show up? Are there regulars? Why or why not? Just some ideas... Keep up the good work!
